The cooperation aims for tourists to choose Greece an attractive holiday destination not only for the sun and sea, but also for the country’s eating habits and unique products. The announcement was made by Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni during an event held recently to honor “Messara olive oil,” Greece’s 100th agricultural product to receive European Union protected status. During her speech at the event, Mrs. Kefalogianni said agritourism was just one of the areas of cooperation between the two ministries. “The collaboration involves the promotion and improvement of agritourism through the further use of the advantages that Greece offers visitors,” the tourism minister said. She added that the showcasing of local agricultural products and gastronomy were essential elements of a series of thematic sections of Greek tourism that the ministry plans to develop to improve the level of offered services. “Messara olive oil” – Greece’s 100th protected food name The Greek product “Messara olive oil” is the 100th Greek agricultural product registered in the European Union with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and protected geographical indication (PGI) status. “Messara,” is the extra virgin olive Oil from the region in the vicinity of Faistos on Crete. Greece’s 101st product to receive a protected food name was the “Tomataki Santorinis,” a small tomato grown on the eastern Aegean island’s volcanic soil.
