Destinations news Athens Classic Marathon Moves Up In World Rankings Based On Number Of Finishers by GTP editing team 13 January 2014 written by GTP editing team 13 January 2014 0 comments Share 0FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 13 The Athens Classic Marathon held last November in the Greek capital, moved up 19 places in the 2013 global rankings in regards to the number of marathon finishers, according to the Association of Road Racing Statisticians (ARRS). The association focuses on elite distance running at distances 3,000m and longer. According to the global ranking of 2013, the Athens Classic Marathon is now in the 37th place, with 8,489 (7,205 men 1,284 women) finishers. In 2012, the Athens Classic Marathon was in 56th place with 6,368 finishers, which means that last year’s marathon saw an increase of 2,121 participants/runners. Thessaloniki’s marathon, Alexander the Great, was listed in 248th place with 1,111 marathon finishers on 21 April 2013. The marathon that ranked first based on the number of finishers was the ING New York City Marathon. A total of 50,304 runners finished the 2013 ING New York City Marathon on 3 November 2013. The marathon was labeled as “the largest marathon in history” by New York Road Runners.
