marina_mitiliniA bill aimed at attracting more visitors to Greek marinas will be tabled in Parliament soon, Merchant Marine Minister Militadis Varvitsiotis announced during a recent television appearance on Greek channel SKAI.

On Greek passenger ferries, Mr. Varvitsiotis said the Shipping Ministry aims to have as many of inter-island ferry routes between the Greek islands as possible by streamlining subsidies and boosting transport on a yearly basis for Kasos, Karpathos and Anafi.

“The services must be self-existent, we will subsidize when there are transportation needs,” the merchant marine minister noted. He added that the subsidy per passenger on some routes reaches 200 euros. “The ships will leave from the nearest point now rather than from Piraeus. Their needs are not met,” Mr. Varvitsiotis said.

I think the Greek Government are living in ‘Cloud Cuckoo Land’. If they think that the so called, soon to be introduced, Greek Cruising Tax for leisure boats, will finance the improvements to the very few Marinas that they have are in for a very rude awakening. We currently have a boat ashore in Preveza & our plan was to stay for several years in the Ionian, spending our yearly budget However we will be staying for this year & most probably leave at the end of the season for Turkey. The Government must understand that boats float & the owners are able to vote with their keels & move to other cruising areas & spend their money elsewhere. This is just not our viewpoint on this. Fellow boat owners are also of this opinion. So if the Marinas are improved, the visitors will only be seeing empty moorings making them look like ghost towns.
