greek_sitesThe Association of Greek Archaeologists has issued a statement in response to a recent article published in TIME magazine that suggests for Greece to turn over its treasures to private companies to protect them from the economic crisis.

“The archaeological sites and monuments of our country belong to the whole of society,” the Greek archaeologists underline in their announcement.

The archaeologists note that the protection, promotion and management of Greece’s monuments is exclusively under the responsibility of the state in accordance to the Constitution and laws of the country.

“These sites embody our historic memory and conscience and are not objects for negotiation with whatever investors, they are not up for privatization of available for any private firm or individual to make a profit,” the announcement reads.

The Greek Archaeologists invite all to “defend the collective memory, the monuments and culture and shout that they are not for sale.”
