Travel_Trade_Athens_2014_Athens_by_nightPassenger numbers at Athens International Airport (AIA) are expected to continue to grow significantly during the summer 2014 period as over 160 new weekly flights are scheduled to connect the Greek capital with international destinations.

AIA_Major airlines that had stopped operations in the Greek capital are returning with routes this summer: Singapore Airlines, Gulf Air and Brussels Airlines. Also, Ryanair’s launch of domestic flights in the country from its new base in Athens Airport is expected to provide a major boost for passenger numbers.

Passenger traffic at Athens Airport in March alone reached 833,000 passengers, an increase of 9.1 percent compared to the same month last year.

Overall, during the first quarter of 2014, AIA recorded 2.37 million more passengers compared to 2013 (8.4 percent increase).

The summer season forecast is encouraging as 2.1 million more seats will be available mainly by Aegean Airlines and Ryanair, according to reports.

It should be noted that this summer low cost airlines will have a significant presence at AIA (33 percent increase compared to last year). Sixteen low cost carriers will connect Athens with 38 airports in 34 cities.
