ANEK Lines has become involved in several European research projects that put the focus on environmental protection and maritime safety.

Elina_LOGOSpecifically, ANEK has joined the ELINA Project, an EU co-funded project under the Environment component of the LIFE+ Programme on the subject of “Integrated Green Life-Cycle Management of Waste Oils and Petroleum Residues.” The program refers to the creation of an integrated and environmentally responsible method to manage the oil waste and residues generated by ships and industries in Greece.

For this reason, ANEK has teamed up with companies Cyclon Eco and Recycling Company, to make mechanical interventions on the ships Olympic Champion and Hellenic Spirit in order to collect petroleum waste generated by the engines into separate tanks. The aim is for the company to deliver at least 80 tonnes of oil waste, separately from any other waste stream, to the host ports of its ships.

Refresh_EU_LOGOANEK is also involved in the research project REFRESH on the subject of “Green Retrofitting of Existing Ships.” The REFRESH project is implemented under the 7th Framework Programme of EC and in collaboration with 19 European companies from six different countries, including shipyards, universities, associations and local authorities.

The project will elaborate on the existing merchant fleet and will aim to treat energy efficiency as an integral part of the life-cycle a ship. This will be achieved with modelling and simulation of energy flows onboard for various operational conditions and for extended periods of time. ANEK LINES is the end user in the project.

REFRESH_objectivesIn addition, ANEK has joined the European research projects “MERIT,” “ROTA,” “MARIBRAIN” and “ASPIS.” These projects aim to develop systems that make shipping more environmentally friendly and offer safer sea transport.
