A sequel to 2002’s box office hit “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” is in the works, according to an announcement by Gold Circle and HBO. Having written the script for the project, Nia Vardalos will reprise her role as “Toula” Portokalos, a first-generation Greek-American woman. John Corbett will play the “xeno” (stranger, non-Greek) who fell in love and married her. The plot for the new film unveils a family secret and a “bigger and fatter” wedding that will reunite the film’s Greek family. According to reports, Rita Wilson, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman will produce the sequel with Vardalos, Paul Brooks, Scott Niemyer, Norm Waitt and Steven Shareshian executive producing. When released in 2002, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” became the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time, and grossed $369 million worldwide. The film is also considered one of the highest-grossing independent movies of all time. A director for the sequel has not yet been announced.
