For the first time since the 2014 Olympic Games were held in Athens, hotels in the Greek capital are recording high occupancy levels, according to the president of the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels, Yiorgos Tsakiris.

Speaking to the Greek press, Mr. Tsakiris said the high occupancy rate is a result of increased international tourist arrivals and conferences being held in Athens.

The Greek capital’s decline as a destination, especially from 2008 onwards, seems to have reversed.

Official data has shown that arrivals to Athens were up by 30.4 percent in May. During the first five months of the year, the growth rate reached 34.4 percent compared with the same period in 2013.

According to the Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises, this year Athens will welcome 750,000 additional arrivals.
