Photo © ANEK Greek ferry operator ANEK Lines recently gave a briefing at its head office in Chania on the progress of the EU green research project ELINA. “ANEK, under its Corporate Social Responsibility, participates in a number of research projects, such as ELINA, which aim to develop systems that make marine navigation friendlier to the environment and offer safer maritime transport,” said ANEK’s president, Yiorgos Katsanevakis. ANEK joined the ELINA project in March 2013. ELINA is an EU co-funded project under the Environment component of the LIFE+ Programme on the subject of “Integrated Green Life-Cycle Management of Waste Oils and Petroleum Residues.” The program refers to the creation of an integrated and environmentally responsible method to manage the oil waste and residues generated by ships and industries in Greece. ANEK Lines – Olympic Champion, car passenger ferry. For this reason, ANEK has teamed up with companies Cyclon Eco and Recycling Company (OEA), to make mechanical interventions on the car passenger ferries Olympic Champion and Hellenic Spirit in order to collect petroleum waste generated by the engines into separate tanks. The aim is for the company to deliver at least 80 tonnes of oil waste, separately from any other waste stream, to the host ports of its ships. ANEK has also joined the European research projects REFRESH, MERIT, POTA and MARIBRAIN that aim to develop systems that make shipping more environmentally friendly and offer safer sea transport.
