Bouboulina’s Museum on Spetses, Greece, will operate every day to as late as 8:30 pm during the peak summer months due to high visitation, according to the museum’s management.

A visit to Bouboulina’s Museum reveals the fascinating story of the heroine of the 1821 Greek War of Independence, who until recently had the honor of being the only female Admiral in world Naval history.

Independent travelers and larger groups of up to 100 are welcome to Bouboulina’s Museum every day from the beginning of March right through to the end of October.

In peak summer months the tours continue until 8:30 pm, enabling every visitor to have the opportunity to take part in a tour. The museum even accepts visitors off season with prior confirmation.

Recently, 12 top travel agents/tour operators from Israel made Bouboulina’s Museum the center of their visit to Spetses and left the island with the best of impressions.

Due to the range of languages available (mentioned below), the museum’s owners hope to attract even more international operators in the coming months.

Bouboulina (1771-1825): An illustrious name that arouses feelings of patriotism, sacrifice and bravery in the heart of every Greek. She is the celebrated heroine of the sea, one of the most famous figures in Greek history. She was nicknamed Kapetanissa.

Bouboulina’s Museum is housed in the home of Bouboulina and the tour into her life begins in the garden area. While a guide narrates in Greek, visitors of all nationalities follow by reading a brief history of Bouboulina’s life – available in 21 languages (Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish Flemish, French, German, Hebrew, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish and Greek).

The tour inside the museum itself is then conducted in English or Greek by friendly and experienced guides. On the spot translation by a group leader is acceptable when necessary.

The museum also gives interesting tidbits of information such as the links between Bouboulina, the Great Powers, the Tsar of Russia, blockade-running and the 16 year-old Bavarian king imposed on Greece.

It should be noted that Bouboulina is also mentioned in a novel on the Greek Revolution by Jules Verne.

Bouboulina’s Museum is owned by Philip Demertzis-Bouboulis, 4th generation of the Bouboulis family.
