Inspectors from the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) were sent to Rhodes on 21 August to investigate reports that a large number of tourists suffered food poisoning at a luxury hotel on the island, the Greek Tourism Ministry said in an announcement.

According to press reports, mainly in the international media, a large number of French and Russian tourists suffered food poisoning at a resort in Lindos over the 15 August national holiday.

An official statement by the resort to the guests (made public through the media) said that the “unfortunate situation” was caused by “an airborne virus disease” that existed on the island at that time.

Following the reports, the Tourism Ministry requested for the GNTO to investigate the matter.

Reports also mentioned that the tourists complained that they were forced by the hotel’s management to pay large sums of money (over 100 euros) for any medical treatment they needed.
