The Telegraph Praises Skopelos, Greece

After a seven-day stay on Skopelos in Greece, the Telegraph’s travel writer Oliver Smith strongly wonders if the destination is perhaps the “perfect Greek island.”

According to Oliver Smith, due to the fact that Skopelos is far from becoming home to themed bars and overcrowded beaches, it has maintained a refreshing authenticity.

“For many visitors it epitomises the appeal of Greece as a holiday destination — unspoilt island life; unpretentious food and accommodation; quiet beaches; walks through green, mountainous interiors; and a complete removal from the stresses of modern life,” he says.

Is Skopelos the perfect Greek island?

Answer of Oliver Smith: “There are finer beaches and more characterful villages to be found elsewhere, but Skopelos ticks most of the boxes,” he says.

Further into the article, the travel writer refers to ways to get around on Skopelos, makes accommodation suggestions and gives tips on what to do on the island.

Oliver Smith seems particularly impressed with Skopelos Town and Glossa – in the far north-west – and advises readers to find accommodation in close distance to one of the locations.

In his description of the town, he notes: “The kafeneon still attracts a clutch of old boys, who gossip and play backgammon over coffee like a scene out of a novel by Louis de Bernières.”

Also mentioned in the article are the dozens of monasteries scattered around the island. In regards to beaches, Oliver Smith mentions his visits to Glysteri, Limnonari and popular Kastani.

“For real solitude, rent a motorboat from Panormos, and head north – you’ll find beautiful spots all the way up the coast (such as Hovolo, Ftelia and Neraki) that are inaccessible to cars,” he advises.
