Air Travel Tripoli Military Airfield To Operate As Civil Airport In 2015 by GTP editing team 16 September 2014 written by GTP editing team 16 September 2014 0 comments Share 0FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 6 The joint ministerial decision that allows the military airfield in Tripoli to open to passenger traffic was signed by the Greek ministers of Defense, Dimitris Avramopoulos, and Infrastructure, Michalis Chrysochoidis, in the presence of the Board of Directors of the Peloponnese Tourism Organization (Konstantinos Marinakos, president and Dimitris Pollalis, vice president) and tourism professionals of Porto Heli – Ermionida and Tolo. As of next year the Civil Aviation Authority will have partial use of the military airfield in Tripoli (Peloponnese), Greece, to service passenger traffic, according to a joint ministerial decision signed on 16 September by the ministers of Defense, Dimitris Avramopoulos, and Infrastructure, Michalis Chrysochoidis. The conversion of the military airfield into a civil airport is expected to take the strain off Kalamata Airport in the southern Peloponnese, which this year recorded a 54 percent increase in passenger traffic. Also, according to Mr. Chrysochoidis, many low cost carriers and charters have expressed an interest to launch flights to Tripoli. On his part, Mr. Avramopoulos underlined that if passenger traffic is serviced at the Tripoli airfield, the Peloponnese will benefit in both commerce and tourism while the region will also attract investors.
