The readers of Condé Nast Traveller were asked to pick their favorite islands for holiday in 2014 and, according to the results, the Greek Islands ranked second best in the world following the Maldives.

“The Maldives came out first thanks to high scores across the board, but most notably for its white-sand beaches,” associate editor Peter Browne, said.

“Closer to home, the Greek Islands, which have come in the top 10 for a decade or more, are in part so popular because our readers love open-hearted Greek hospitality,” he added.

The results were compiled after questionnaires, inserted in the magazine and posted online, were returned by readers who rated foreign islands on six criteria: scenery, beaches, value for money, food, places to stay and the local people.

The 10 most stunning islands in the world are:

1. Maldives
2. Greek Islands
3. Sicily
4. St Barth, The Caribbean
5. Balearic Islands
6. Seychelles
7. Capri
8. Barbados
9. Mauritius
10. Malta
