Culture Greece To Celebrate The “Faces of Time” During European Heritage Days 2014 by GTP editing team 25 September 2014 written by GTP editing team 25 September 2014 1 comment Share 0FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 7 The theme of this year’s European Heritage Days in Greece is the “Faces of Time” and will involve over 100 archaeological sites and museums across the country. Entrance to archaeological sites and museums will be free of charge during the weekend of European Heritage Days (27-28 September). On Friday, 26 September, European Heritage Days is mainly dedicated to schools. “Time is biological. Time is circular. Time is movement, transformation, evolution. Time is memory and thus history. All the things around us carry time within. It is an opportunity to try to uncover time during the events,” the Greek Culture Ministry noted in an announcement. European Heritage Days Every year, during a weekend in September, the 50 signatory States to the European Cultural Convention take part in the European Heritage Days and monuments, museums, archaeological sites and historic sites open their doors to the public throughout Europe. This initiative of the European Heritage Days, launched by the Council of Europe in 1991, has been a joint action of the Council of Europe and the European Commission since 1999. It aims to raise the awareness of European citizens to the richness and cultural diversity of Europe. Every year, concerts, festivals, exhibitions, educational activities, creative workshops and performances, organized around a special theme, bring visitors in touch with their cultural heritage in ways more direct and entertaining. Each year, national and regional events are organized around a special theme. These themes vary in each country from year to year. The Council of Europe and the European Commission encourage the selection of trans-national themes which can be illustrated by cross-border activities that are jointly set up by the different countries. Greece has been participating in the European Heritage Days since 1994. Follow GTP Headlines on Google News to keep up to date with all the latest on tourism and travel in Greece.
