The Municipality of Kalambaka, in the Trikala regional unit, part of Thessaly in Greece, is expected to be known soon as the “Municipality of Meteora,” according to a decision taken recently by the city council.

Kalambaka is a Greek town of some 12,000 citizens that is situated on the foot of the most extraordinary Meteora rocks, an attraction that is popular worldwide.

The decision for the name change was taken on the grounds that few professionals in the wider tourism industry know the destination as “Kalambaka” and mainly refer to it as “Meteora.”

The name change is expected to help enhance the region’s tourism industry.

Following the city council’s decision, a request for the official change of name will be forwarded to the region and the government for approval.

The awesome rock formations of Meteora include one of the largest and most significant cluster of monasteries in Greece, second only to that of Mount Athos.

“Suspended in the air” (the meaning of Meteora in Greek), these monasteries represent a unique artistic achievement and are one of the most powerful examples of the architectural transformation of a site into a place of retreat, meditation and prayer.

As a monument of outstanding cultural and natural importance, the unique site was included in 1988 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
