The decision for the name change was taken on the grounds that few professionals in the wider tourism industry know the destination as “Kalambaka” and mainly refer to it as “Meteora.” The name change is expected to help enhance the region’s tourism industry. Following the city council’s decision, a request for the official change of name will be forwarded to the region and the government for approval. As a monument of outstanding cultural and natural importance, the unique site was included in 1988 on the UNESCO World Heritage List. For more on the Meteora site, press here.
