56th Biennale_Biennale_VeniceIn May next year, the work of Greek artist Maria Papadimitriou will be on show at the 56th Biennale set to take place in Venice on 9 May-22 November at the Giardini and the Arsenale among other venues. Artists representing 53 countries will be participating in the biannual International Art Exhibition titled “All the World’s Futures”.

The Athens-born artist will be participating with her work titled “Why Look At Animals?” which focuses on the relationship between reason and instinct. A culture ministry committee selected Mrs. Papadimitriou’s work among 11 nominations.

Mrs. Papadimitriou studied fine arts at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-arts in Paris. She is currently a professor at the Thessaly University Polytechnic in the architectural engineering department. In 2003, she was awarded the Deste Foundation’s award for contemporary Greek art.

The theme of this year’s event –“All the World’s Futures”– was selected by African-born Biennale curator Okwui Enwezor, and attempts to explore the relationship between artists and their art as it manifests in a given sociopolitical environment.
