Deputy Culture and Sports minister Angela Gerekou was also present at the meeting. Environment minister Ioannis Maniatis approved last week the terms that will pave the way for the construction of the first waterway in Greece on the Ionian island of Corfu. In efforts to speed up the licensing procedure, Mr. Maniatis met with Corfu Port Authority president Spyros Andriotis and Water Airports president Tasos Govas and gave the green light for the construction of the first waterway at the port of Corfu. The waterway, which is expected to boost the local economy, modernize infrastructure and create new jobs, will be constructed on the northwest side of the port and will service 10 flights daily. It will include the installation of a desalination unit and the upgrade of the existing road network. Mr. Maniatis said he was pleased the ministry was contributing to the construction of the first waterway in Greece and laying the groundwork for the procedure to take off. “We are actively supporting the investment initiative and the development of a new growth model in the country which will contribute substantially to the upgrade of the tourist product on offer and the creation of new jobs,” he said. The minister added that besides the obvious advantages for tourism, the investment will provide “imperative” social services including the transport of patients or goods.
