Greece Tops World List of Airline Route Launches

Greece is among the top 10 countries worldwide to have introduced new flights in 2014, according to anna.aero, a weekly e-journal and website devoted to global airline/airport network planning issues.

According to anna.aero’s (Airline Network News and Analysis) new route database, Greece is ranked ninth among the top 15 countries for new airline services launched in 2014.

The report found that at all Greek airports, a total of 154 new airline services were launched with Aegean Airlines leading the way for the recovering Greek market. Aegean was listed among 17 of the world’s carriers — among them low cost airlines Ryanair, easyJet, Germanwings and Vueling — with the most new services launched.

European carriers took nine of the top 12 spots despite low economic growth in the region with four carriers from the US and one from Mexico (Volaris) clinching the remaining spots.

According to the same report, a total 352 of the world’s airlines launched over 2,550 new services across 171 countries in 2014, an average of 50 new services per week, an additional 150 new routes compared to 2013.

The 2,564 new services involve 5,128 airports.
