Travelling by ferry will be easier thanks to a new e-ticket system to be launched in Greece in the coming months, press reports said on Tuesday.

Merchant Marine Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis paved the way for the launch of the system with a decision, which — once finalized — will enable travellers to use their smartphones to book, purchase and print their own boarding pass online.

Reports underline that coastal shipping insiders view the decision as a positive step that will facilitate travel, adding that it will however require ferry companies to draw up an unified system of ticket control.

Mr. Varvitsiotis said that the new scheme will create “friendly and efficient services for passengers” and is part of the ministry’s ongoing efforts to modernize coastal shipping, boost passenger traffic, optimize passenger ticket control and simplify bureaucratic procedures, contributing in the process to the overall upgrade of services offered.
