Organized by the municipality of Thira and the Santorini Municipal Sports, Culture and Environmental Organization in collaboration with Active Media Group and with the technical support of Xterra Greece, the Santorini Experience comes to highlight the importance of exercise while tapping into the ever-growing potential of sports tourism. Organizers have planned running and swimming events along picturesque routes on one of the most beautiful Greek islands and one of the most loved destinations by tourists across the globe. On May 1, student running races will take place in Perissa. May 2 brings the 1.5 mile swimming race from the volcano to the old port, and May 3 features the half-marathon (21.1km) from Oia to Fira. Ten- and five-kilometre races will also be taking place. “Sports are inspired by nature and should thus take place in nature. What could be better than to combine sporting activity with the beauty of nature, especially when it is as unique as Santorini’s caldera and view to the volcano,” Thira Mayor Anastasios-Nicholaos Zorzos said of the event. A part of the proceeds from the Santorini Experience will go towards the construction of an athletics track at the island’s stadium. Registration will begin soon on: www.santorini-experience.com The event is sponsored by the Santorini Hotels Association, Reef and The North Face.
