Over the last few weeks, thousands of Interrailers casted their vote, choosing from 15 shortlisted European destinations on Interrail’s official Facebook page. As the ambassador for unlimited travel across Europe, Interrail had shortlisted the European cities based on thousands of reviews and opinions of Interrailers across Europe taking into account their attractiveness and high value for money. With 1,658 votes, the German city of Heidelberg was announced the winner of the Interrail Destination of the Year Award. Thessaloniki came in second place with 1,163 votes. “This means that the destination appeals to a wide range of travelers who show a preference to Thessaloniki even through alternative ways of travel beyond the usual means of transport by airplane, bus and car”, the Thessaloniki Hotels Association said in an announcement. The association aims to promote Thessaloniki to travellers that choose rail travel for their holidays. Thessaloniki was followed by Lisbon with 647 votes, Antwerp with 602 votes and Bologna with 350 votes. The destinations that managed to secure a place in the top 5 will be promoted through Interrail’s social media channels, newsletters and included in press trips organized by Interrail. With the Destination Award, Interrail presented its travel community a diverse mix of unique cities from all across the European continent aiming to inspire travellers to further explore the variety that Europe has to offer. The Interrail concept was created in 1972, as a co-operation between European railways, with the aim of making it easy for people to experience the freedom of travelling around Europe by train.
