Athens Airport Passenger Traffic at 3 Million, Up by 25.7% in Q1

Athens International Airport (AIA) announced a record-setting month for March, with passenger traffic soaring to over 1.1 million, a 24.5 percent increase, demonstrating the ongoing growth rate of Greek tourism.

Overall passenger traffic at AIA for the first three months of 2015 reached 3 million passengers, a 25.7 percent rise, with domestic traffic increasing by 36.9 percent.

At the same time, the number of foreign travelers opting for Athens as their main destination increased by 29 percent both in March and in the first quarter of 2015.

According to AIA data, the number of foreign passengers rose significantly in March by 20 percent, while the number of domestic passengers also surged by 33.2 percent. Greek travelers showed a significant increase of 21 percent, while recording a 36 percent rise in domestic travel.

Meanwhile, domestic and international flights increased in the first quarter of 2015 by 15.1 percent and 18.6 percent, respectively, with the number of flights to AIA during the first quarter of 2015 at 31,691, a 17.1 percent increase compared to the same period in 2014.

AIA cites airlines’ competitive offers and additional seats for the strengthened figures.
