Greece’s national disability association is calling on the government to ensure that people with disability have access to all of the country’s archaeological monuments, cultural sites and related services, and is demanding the culture ministry introduce strong incentives so that individuals with disabilities from around the world will visit the country, thus providing a strong impetus to national tourism.

In a letter sent on Thursday, to Deputy Culture Minister Nikos Xydakis, the National Confederation of Persons with Disabilities (ESAmeA) is calling for immediate measures that will ensure accessibility to Greece’s cultural services.

In the meantime, the association also urges the minister to intervene towards preparing the lift at the Acropolis, which it claims is not operational. The lift, a key demand by ESAmea, was constructed ahead of the 2004 Olympics and Paralympics in Athens in order to cater to the needs of disabled visitors.
