Every year, since 1977, International Museum Day is organized worldwide around May 18 by the International Council of Museums (ICOM). The day is an occasion to raise awareness on how important museums are in the development of society. On the occasion of International Museum Day on 18 May, several events have already launched as of May 3 at museums, monuments, archaeological sites and cultural institutions throughout Greece. These events include exhibitions, educational programs for students of primary and secondary education, workshops, conferences, lectures and guided tours. The events will run until to June 18. This year’s theme for the event will be “Museums for a sustainable society”. It highlights the role of museums in raising public awareness about the need for a society that is less wasteful, more cooperative and that uses resources in a way that respects living systems.
