The International Council of Museums – Hellenic National Committee will honor the Industrial Gas Museum in Athens on the occasion of International Museum Day 2015 on May 18. The Industrial Gas Museum is the first industrial museum in Athens.

As the “museum of honor” for 2015, the Industrial Gas Museum will host a series of events from May 15 until May 24. The events can be found here (in Greek).

The opening event will be held on May 18 at the museum at 7pm and include a museum tour, film screenings and a contemporary music concert.

Industrial Gas Museum

The Industrial Gas Museum opened its doors to the public in 2013 in Technopolis in the Gazi District. The main objective of the Museum is the promotion and protection of the old Athens Gasworks plant, an industrial heritage monument that supplied energy and lighting in the Athens metropolitan area for 130 years.

International Museum Day

International_Museum_Day_Greece_2015_1Greek museums will once again take part in the worldwide celebration of International Museum Day and offer free admission all day on Monday 18 May 2015.

Every year, since 1977, International Museum Day is organized worldwide around May 18 by the International Council of Museums (ICOM). The day is an occasion to raise awareness on how important museums are in the development of society.

On the occasion of International Museum Day on 18 May, several events have already launched as of May 3 at museums, monuments, archaeological sites and cultural institutions throughout Greece. These events include exhibitions, educational programs for students of primary and secondary education, workshops, conferences, lectures and guided tours. The events will run until to June 18.

This year’s theme for the event will be “Museums for a sustainable society”. It highlights the role of museums in raising public awareness about the need for a society that is less wasteful, more cooperative and that uses resources in a way that respects living systems.

Participation in International Museum Day is growing among museums all over the world. In 2014, more than 35,000 museums participated in the event in over 140 countries from all continents.
