Irish low cost carrier Ryanair recently celebrated its first year of operations in Athens and was announced as the second largest carrier based at Athens International Airport.

At an event on Monday at the Acropolis Museum, it was revealed that from April 1, 2014 until the end of May 2015, Ryanair transported 1.8 million passengers, of which one million flew on domestic flights and 800,000 on international flights.

According to figures releases by Athens Airport, the Irish carrier holds a 15 percent share in the Athens market. Ryanair’s share in Athens’ domestic air travel market is some 21 percent, while in the international market it is 10.3 percent.

According to Ryanair’s sales and marketing manager for Greece, John Alborante, the company’s goal for 2015 is to reach 13 routes and transport 2.4 million passengers.

Mr. Alborante hinted that the company would add more routes in the near future and added that the company’s management has made a request to the Greek Government for a reduction in airport taxes/charges.

However, he said that until now there has been no positive response from the government.
