fishing tourism2Greek fishermen are finally seeing their profession expand thanks to amended legislation that allows them to use their boats to offer tourists fishing adventures or exploration trips.

Under the revised law, fishermen holding a professional license and a boat of up to 15 meters can offer up to 12 passengers boating trips provided their vessels cover technical specifications.

In efforts to tap into the benefits of fishing and sport fishing tourism, the rural development ministry believes this decision will work as an incentive to get fishermen to work together for the promotion of their traditional profession including demonstrations of fishing techniques as well as of their destinations.

Hundreds of professional fishermen have already applied for the license, which will also give them the chance to boost their annual income.

Fishing holidays and sport fishing tourism is becoming increasingly popular, paving the way for business growth on a local and national level.
