Melina_Hydra_1On the occasion of the Miaoulia 2015 event on Hydra, the Fraternity of the Athenian Hydriots is paying tribute to the charismatic personality of Melina Mercouri to mark the 20th anniversary of her passing.

Under the auspices and sponsorship of Hydra’s municipality, the fraternity has announced a series of activities entitled “Melina Mercouri returns to Hydra”, dedicated to the memory of Melina, the renowned Greek actress, singer and politician.

The main event features the very popular exhibition, “Melina Mercouri Street” from the Melina Mercouri foundation. The exhibition will run until June 23.

In the “Melina Mercouri Street” exhibition, the visitor will “participate” in her international brilliant life, vision, dynamic spirit, artistic nature and political career. “Melina” is presented in the exhibition comprising photographic and audiovisual material. The Melina Mercouri Street exhibition was hosted in 2014 at the Benaki Museum in Athens (more than 10,000 visitors) and at the Carolos Monastery in Chania, Crete.

Throughout the summer, Hydra will host other important cultural events such as the film screenings of Melina’s famous movies at the open-air summer cinema Gardenia in collaboration with the Film Club of Hydra: Phaedra (19 & 25/6), Stella (20 & 26/6) and Never on Sunday (21 & 28/6).

Festivities include musical events and a treasure hunt in the footpaths and alleys of Hydra.

Hydra, apart from its natural beauty and history, was and remains a great destination for Cultural Tourism. The famous movie by Jules Dassin Phaedra was filmed on the island in 1962. In the film Melina starred with Anthony Perkins.
