Greek carrier Aegean Airlines announced increased passenger traffic for July 2015, handling a total of 1,473,568 passengers, up by 19 percent compared to the same month last year.

The company attributes the improved results to its expanded network connections and to its immediate reaction with targeted offers after demand dropped due to political uncertainty and capital controls.

The number of international flights rose by 28 percent against July 2014, for all nine of the company hubs: Athens, Thessaloniki, Heraklion, Chania, Rhodes, Corfu, Kalamata, Kos and Larnaka.

In the meantime, international passenger traffic to Athens was highest in 2015, at 37 percent and 808,450 passengers, primarily due to the launch of 16 new destinations.

Heraklion, on Crete, also saw an increase in international traffic, which reached 30 percent, while traffic to Rhodes rose 15 percent.

“Aegean, contributes with all its forces in order to support our country in these difficult circumstances, as well as to maintain its own growth potential. There are great challenges and difficulties, but tourism can once again become a driver for recovery and it should be supported. Aegean, operating in 134 destinations in 45 countries, increasing thus Greece’s accessibility and fulfilling a targeted offer programme, managed to increase traffic to our country, as well as domestic tourism to small islands that are especially dependent on it,” said Aegean CEO Dimitris Gerogiannis.
