Alexis Tsipras on late Thursday confirmed in a televised address that he is resigning as Greek Prime Minister, clearing the way for early elections expected on September 20.

His announcement took place after his government recently secured a three-year, 86 billion euro bailout package for Greece.

In his address, Mr. Tsipras said that after the “difficult cycle” had reached its end, he felt “the deep ethical and political obligation” for the Greek people to judge what he has done.

Leader of left-wing Syriza party, Alexis Tsipras was elected Prime Minister of Greece seven months ago.

However, before an official election date can be set, other parties will be given three days to try and form a new administration without the Syriza party.

After Mr. Tsipras’ televised address, New Democracy leader Evangelos Meimarakis said in a press conference that he is planning to meet with other political party leaders, as it is his responsibility to exhaust all possibilities before Greek voters go to the polls again.

“We will explore all avenues in an effort to ensure elections are the last option, not the first as Tsipras wants,” Mr. Meimarakis said and accused Tsipras of making an attempt to “escape from his problems”.

Following is the televised address of Alexis Tsipras, announcing his resignation.
