Air Travel ‘Fly to Volos’ Campaigners Call on Greek Gov’t to Bring Flights to Regional Airport by GTP editing team 3 September 2015 written by GTP editing team 3 September 2015 1 comment Share 0FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 15 Local campaigners “Fly to Volos” are again calling on the Greek government and relevant authorities to tap into the tourism potential of the region by making use of the infrastructure at the Nea Anchialos Airport in Volos, central Greece. The online campaign launched by local tourism business professionals in 2014 is trying to get the government and authorities to increase the airport’s activity by bringing in low-cost carriers and international flights all year round. The Nea Anchialos facility, which is not part of the current privatization program of 14 regional airports, provides access to Mt Pelion, the Sporades islands and Evia, as well as to central Greece and Thessaly, and is close to the cities of Larissa, Lamia and Trikala, ideal for travelers wishing to visit to nearby attractions including Meteora, Mt Olympus or the ancient city of Dion. The campaigners are noting that though a state-of-the-art terminal building was opened at the airport in 2010, authorities have failed to develop a year-round schedule of European flights to facilitate tourism to the region. They stress that international flights can support the economic development of the area, boost employment and establish the area as a leading tourism destination by securing an international flight schedule and effectively marketing the airport.
