European_Heritage_Days“Violence and tolerance” will be the focus of this year’s European Heritage Days events to be held in Greece, on September 25-27, particularly at a time when the country is in the international spotlight due to the ongoing tragedies of thousands of Syrian refugees seeking safety away from their war-torn homeland.

Culture_Heritage_Days_1The issue will be explored through a series of educational programs, guided tours, discussions, music and theatre events to be held at over 100 “culture hubs” throughout Greece, including museums and archaeological sites, with the goal of raising awareness and highlighting the crucial role of tolerance in the formation of healthy societies.

Launched by the Council of Europe in 1985, European Heritage Days are a locally-led initiative held every year in September in 50 countries, providing access to thousands of rarely opened sites and unique events to over 20 million people annually.

Indicatively, on September 26 the Acropolis Museum will feature “The Great Gods of Samothrace and Athena of the Acropolis” discussion, in English (at 6pm).

All European Heritage Day events are free of charge, as is admission to museums and archaeological sites.
