New Upscale City Hotels to Welcome Athens Visitors in 2016

Visitors to Athens will have an even wider choice of exclusive accommodation as a number of city hotels are set to open their doors in the Greek capital in the coming year.

The 5-star Domotel Kastri is set to open its doors first this week in the northern Athens suburb of Nea Erythrea, near Kifissia. Domotel Kastri is the most recent addition to Domotel Group’s luxury hotel chain.

A Syntagma luxury complex has been leased from the Church of Greece for 35 years with a renewal option of an additional 15 years by a group of companies operating the Electra and Athens Gate hotels. The new unit will operate in the former culture ministry building, currently being revamped, along central Mitropoleos St, with the group having invested 15 million euros in the 5-star hotel, 220-room complex complete with pool, restaurant, fitness and conference centers. The hotel is set to open in Spring 2016.

Two hotels are slated to open in the upscale neighborhood of Kolonaki, one at the former Athens Lycabettus Hotel on Valaoritou St, leased out by its owners, the Archdiocese of Athens. And the second, a 39-room boutique hotel to be run by Coco-Mat Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, budgeted at 10 million euros.

In the meantime, a 4-star hotel – formerly the Fashion House Hotel – on central Omonia Square is set to welcome travelers at the start of 2016, leased by a Greek-American group for 40 years.

According to media reports, another eight-storey unit off central Pireos Ave will operate as fully furnished apartments to let.

In the meantime, the licensing procedure is underway for a 400-bed hotel complex complete with 5-star hotel at the “Asteria” location in Glyfada, to be managed by the Papatheoharis Group.
