The mountainous region of Evrytania in central Greece, is taking part for the first time this year in the World Travel Market (WTM) here in London, aiming to gain insight, ideas and knowhow in order to better promote its diverse tourist offerings.

Unlike other Greek destinations, which are seeking to build strong ties with international tour operators, the Evrytania region, which is known for its picturesque villages, wonderful wildlife, lush forests and fully functional ski resorts, is only now taking organized baby steps to brand its product.

“The region is visited primarily by Greeks, almost 95 percent,” hotelier Sofia Flega, a member of the Karpenisi Tourism Committee, told the GTP on the sidelines of the WTM on Monday.

“As for foreign markets, we mostly receive holidaymakers from Israel, who are primarily interested in adventure tourism such as jeep safaris throughout the region.”

The problem, Ms Flega adds, is that despite the destination’s multiple offerings, there have been little or no organized promotional actions.

“The region of Evrytania has something different to offer than your usual sea and sun, there is so much more, a different style of travel that includes adventure in very unique natural settings; a side of Greece that foreign visitors rarely see,” Mrs Flega, who is also secretary of the Evrytania Hoteliers Association and owner of the Lecadin Hotel, explained, referring to the trekking, climbing, mountain biking, skiing and rafting activities available – among others.

“Now things are changing and that’s why we’re here today, to gain experience and ideas,” Karpenisi-born Flega said.
