Primarily focused on the financial and trade district, the scheme includes the creation of a pedestrianized road network, repairs to pavements and streets, the upgrade of central squares, the addition of green spaces and lighting, repairs to damaged facilities, limiting cafeteria and restaurant spaces, tackling illegal parking and highlighting the Athens’ historic character. The plan will cover the highly popular central Athens area marked by the following streets: Evripidou, Praxitelous, Leka, Athinaidos, Agias Eirinis and Athinas. Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis explained that the goal is to ensure a limited growth rate of entertainment venues while attracting residents and small offices back to the city center. He added that the contractor is set to be selected in the summer with projects set for completion six months later. The municipal authority also said that plans — already approved by the City Council — include pedestrianizing the following roads: Avramiotou, Agathonos, Vyssis, Chrysospiliotissis, Karori, Vlahava, Polykleitou, Nikiou and Kairi.
