The significance of preserving and promoting the Attica vineyard was the focus of a presentation on Monday by the Attica Vineyards Winemakers Association (ENOAA).

Athens_wine_savatianoAiming to tap into the four million tourists visiting Attica each year, ENOAA members discussed the challenges as well as plans for the promotion of Attica vineyards and wineries for the 2016-2020 period. Central to the campaign is none other than the local “savatiano” variety, which winemakers aim to employ as an “ambassador” towards the promotion of Attica wines, enotourism and gastronomy.

According to the wine specialists attending the event, in order to achieve longterm benefits, the Attica vineyard requires restructuring, which can be achieved through the EU’s fully-funded “Eradication – Restructuring – Shoring” program.

Among other issues discussed at the event was the establishment of a standard tour under the title “Attica Wine Roads”, which will include the most picturesque locales of the Attica wine region. Visitors will have the opportunity to visit select wine-producing units or small estates which meet quality specifications. The tour will also include points of archaeological, folklore and cultural interest as well as sites of particular importance for the environment.

Producers also explored the idea of an annual wine celebration/festival which will highlight the quality varieties produced in Attica and promote these products abroad.
