In mid December 2015, the Panhellenic Union of Employees for the Guarding of Antiquities (PEYFA) had announced a five-day workweek and weekend strikes in protest of a government decision to slash their weekend day rate by 35 percent in accordance to a new state payroll for civil servants. Following strike action at the country’s main archaeological sites and museums on the last weekends of 2015, the government confirmed that the weekend day rate of guards and cleaning staff would soon rise by 25 percent. Operations at the museums and archaeological sites in Greece are expected to be back to normal as of the first weekend of 2016.
