The uninhabited Dodecanese islet of Alimia, situated between Rhodes and Halki, will host 20 daring travelers wishing to try their luck and skills in “The Island” travel concept game to kick off in October.

Beyond Borders logo“The Island” participants will be taken to Alimia and required to live on the remote island for 10 days while fending for themselves and facing a series of survival trials, including building shelter, finding food, etc. with the aim of collecting points or smaller prizes, which may include a full meal or a night’s accommodation at one of the neighboring islands. The contestant who gathers the most points at the end of the 10-day period will win the main prize.

As part of its ongoing efforts to attract tourism and tap into new markets, the the South Aegean Region Tourism Department, in collaboration with the Greek National Tourism Organization’s Netherlands branch (area of responsibility: Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg), will be working with Belgian concept travel operator “Beyond Borders” for the organization of the survival contest.

“It was immediately evident upon our arrival that this tiny island was exactly what we were looking for,” said Beyond Borders’ Joris Meermans.

“We are confident that this marks the beginning of a very good and long-standing cooperation with the South Aegean Region and the Municipality of Halki,” he added.

South Aegean Region Deputy Prefect Marietta Papavasiliou stressed that innovative travel products such as “The Island” can attract special interest tourists and contribute to the extension of the tourist season.

My wife and I sailed from crete to Alimia on our yacht Norna Biron in December, 2015, we anchored in the bay for a few days, the water is crystal clear even at that time of year it was very hot and dry, I hope the competitors will be taking drinking water with them, we are anchored on Symi now and will be back in the area in October, hopefully we can sail over to say hi.
