‘Daily Mail’ Tells All to ‘Explore History & Heartbreak’ at Greece’s Spinalonga

Daily Mail writer Helen Atkinson may describe Spinalonga, the Greek island off Crete, as a “tiny speck”, but she’s quick to point out that if you’re into history and fiction then this is the place to visit.

Intrigued by Victoria Hislop’s novel The Island, which was based on the true stories of Spinalonga’s afflicted inhabitants back in the 1930s when it was home to the lepers of the region, Ms Atkinson decided to visit, be transported into the heartbreaking past and indulge in its luxurious present.

Her Spinalonga sojourn combined an extensive tour of the islet with a lavish stay at the Elounda Gulf Villas & Suites complete with private pools, a beach club and a mouthwatering Greek feast.

“In its own way, Spinalonga is a life-affirming place to visit,” the Daily Mail writer says of a place that was once a symbol of isolation and exile.
