Introducing novel tourism products that will suit the tastes of Austrian travelers is the Thessaloniki Hotels Association’s (THA) latest project following the insight gained during the Ferien Μesse International Tourism Fair held in Vienna last week. Major Austrian tour operators have included the northern port city in a number of cultural package tours set to run as of spring this year. Austrian holidaymakers have repeatedly expressed interest in experiential travel that combines history, archaeology and religious tourism with sea, sun and relaxation. In efforts to win over this part of the European market, the THA has invested in a four-pronged tourism strategy focusing on history, entertainment, gastronomy and culture, with Thessaloniki as a reference point. The action plan is part of its ongoing 2014-2017 agenda which aims to increase the number of incoming travelers and overnight stays all year round. In this direction, while in Vienna, the THA held meetings with representatives of Austrian Airlines, which already offers direct flights to Thessaloniki, local tour operators and media.
