For 12 days, Project Pathways’ team of volunteers will be working three-five hours a day at Arethousa to reopen pathways and signpost a hiking path leading to a beach that is currently only accessible by sea. The goal is to offer trekkers and more adventurous hikers maximum access with minimal environmental impact. Shared accommodation will be provided by the Ikarian Center, as well as cooking facilities, WiFi and shuttle service to Evdilos and nearby beaches. Participants do not need to know Greek, and will during their stay also have the chance to participate in activities and excursions. The project is about pooling human resources to ensure that the island’s unique eco-system is not affected by the hundreds of tourists who take to its mountains, beaches and forests every year. Founded in 1995, the Ikarian Centre operates as a Greek language school, offering a wide range of parallel programs, including translation classes, art residencies and volunteer initiatives.
