Day Event Explores Peloponnese Tourism Growth

Promoting the tourism offerings of the region and implementing the successful Greek Breakfast program, as well as dealing with structural and fiscal issues impacting the tourism industry, topped the agenda of a tourism workshop held last week at the Dimitsana Conference & Cultural Center.

Organized by the Peloponnese Tourism Organization, the day event included the participation of the region’s tourism professionals as well as local authorities who shared insight and ideas as well as planning for the coming season.

Issues discussed included the VAT increase in hotel and tourist services, the categorization of accommodation facilities based on keys and stars, financing opportunities via EU funds and the far-reaching effects of the sharing economy on the hospitality industry.

In the meantime, the executive director of the committee for the nomination of Tripolis as Culture Capital of Europe 2021, Charalambos Papaioannou, referred to the positive role the title would play in stimulating the local economy.

The workshop closed with an open discussion which included proposals and recommendations for the further development of the region’s tourism offerings and the improvement of its infrastructure projects. The findings of the day event will be presented at a soon-to-be-announced meeting between private operators and local authorities on the promotion of specific tourism development proposals.
