President of the Economic and Social Council of Greece (OKE), board member of the Hellenic Professional Yacht Owners Association (HPYOA) and secretary general of the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE), Mr Vernicos was re-elected to the NEE board for the 2016-2020 period. After thanking all those who voted for him, Mr Vernicos stressed the need to remain united in order to face the challenges ahead. “The upcoming period is especially critical for the yachting and marine tourism sectors. This explains our sector’s major participation in the NEE elections.” Besides referring to the difficult economic climate in Greece, Mr Vernicos also made mention of increased VAT charges, which he said may lead to unfair competition. Mr Vernicos also pointed out that neighboring Turkey has grown into a major competitor in the Aegean. Owner of Vernicos Yachts, Mr Vernicos was born into a ship-owning family from the Cycladic island of Sifnos. He studied economics at the universities of Athens and London.
