Housed in a restored early 20th-century mansion on central Eratosthenous St near the landmark Panathenian Marble Stadium, the museum – a project funded by the Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation – will feature 19th- and 20th-century works of art by Picasso, Chagall, Klee, Kandinsky, Rodin, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Monet, Miro, Giacometti and many more, all from the legendary Basil and Elise Goulandris collection.

The museum, budgeted at 20,000,000 euros (excluding the purchase of the property), has been designed by I & A Vikelas architects, and will include five floors of exhibits, an art store, library, children’s workshop, 190-seat auditorium, maintenance workshop spaces, a garden, and a rooftop cafe with a view to the Acropolis.

The museum will operate according to the standards of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) founded in 1979 in the capital of the Cycladic island of Andros, the birthplace of Basil Goulandris, hosting visiting as well as the foundation’s permanent collection.

Besides the large number of works by internationally acclaimed artists, the Basil and Elise Goulandris collection is also made up of distinguished Greek artists, including Fassianos, Gaitis, Gounaropoulos, Hatzikyriakos-Ghikas, Kounellis, Moralis, Psychopedis, Takis, Tetsis, Tsarouchis, Tsoclis and Zongolopoulos, among others.
