The theatre, which has become Larissa’s hallmark, will be open daily, from 10 am to 1 pm, with free admission. Located at the foot of the hill of the Fortress in the city center, Larissa’s ancient theatre is one of the best preserved of its kind and one of the largest in antiquity, with a seating capability of 10,000 persons. Visitors to the ancient theatre will be able to browse through the spaces of the orchestra and stage, which have been cleared. However, entrance to the theatre’s koilon (hollow), where the seats are located, is prohibited for the time being, as works are to continue in a later stage. The Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities aims to include the next stage of maintenance works in the new NSRF program and for the theatre to be fully open to visitors in the next four years. Excavation and maintenance works had begun on a systematic basis in the late 1970’s. During the earlier works, many statues and other findings were discovered and are now hosted at the Diachronic Museum of Larissa.
