Marking the publication of two books on the life and journeys of British author, scholar and soldier Patrick Leigh Fermor, travel and cultural events organizers Somewhere We Know is planning a tour of the Mani region in the Peloponnese and of the island of Crete on June 17-21. Described by a BBC journalist as a “cross between Indiana Jones, James Bond and Graham Greene”, Fermor had a soft spot for Greece, visiting tiny villages, ancient sites, natural wonders and finally settling down in Mani. The five day trip organized by Somewhere We Know will include visits to Mani and Crete, where Fermor fought in WW II. During the German occupation, he served as a special operations officer posted to organise the island’s resistance to the occupation. Disguised as a shepherd, he lived for over two years in the Cretan mountains operating as “Michalis”. Travel company Somewhere We Know organizes experiential travel and cultural experiences, food & wine tours, hiking and family tours across Greece. It’s upcoming five-day expedition is set for May 16-20 and will focus on healing under the title: “Asclepieia: The Sanctuaries of Healing in Ancient Greece”. For more info on the Fermor trip call 211-4113224 or send an e-mail to info@somewhereweknow.com. Registration is open until April 15.
