Stefanou Air Photos Student and youth travel have begun to pick up pace contributing to tourism revenue for the Cycladic island of Syros. According to the Syros – Ermoupolis Municipality, student tourism for the months of March-May 2016 rose by a massive 53.7 percent compared to the same months in the previous year, and by 93 percent compared to 2014. Regional authorities said the number of schools which chose Syros as a midterm destination — traditionally between March and May — increased substantially, with schools from Attica, the Peloponnese, Macedonia, Thessaly, Central Greece, the Cyclades and the Northeast Aegean visiting Syros for both its rich history and culture as well as its natural beauty. Among the most visited sites and monuments were the Apollo Theater, the Ermoupolis Industrial Museum and City Hall. Local authorities have in the last two years made efforts towards establishing Syros as an all-year destination aiming in the meantime to attract student and youth tourism, sports, religious and cultural tourism. The island’s extensive history, its diverse religious community as well as its historic monuments and central role as the capital of the Cyclades group, provides a wide scope for the potential visitor, whether young or old.
