Under the title “Empty Beaches, Sleepy Villages and Quiet Tavernas” the London Times featured this month the tiny Halkidiki island of Ammouliani for its white sand, spectacular view, warm hospitality and great food. Described as idyllic, Ammouliani — just 15 minutes away from Thessaloniki by boat — was among the “treats” of a press trip organized by the Halkidiki Tourism Organization (HTO) to the region’s only inhabited (population of 600) island. As part of the HTO’s long-term tourism strategy, a second fam trip offered British Airways destination manager Kate Bigger and a team from British Airways Holidays a taste of Halkidiki as well as landmark Petralona Cave, the Nikiti Folk Museum and the village of Athitos earlier this month. Also on the agenda was a fam trip for one of Italy’s major tour operators – Group Alpitour, which recently added the Halkidiki region to its catalogue and revealed plans for new contracts in 2017 and additional charter flights to meet the expected demand. The HTO’s latest initiative abroad included a tribute event to Greek philosopher Aristotle — as part of 2016 Aristotle Anniversary Year — in the Italian municipality of Biassono, Lombardy.
