Greek Airports See Hike in Passenger Count in First 5 Months of 2016

Athens_airportThere was a 10.3 percent rise in the number of passengers traveling through Greece’s airports during the first five months of 2016, compared to the same period last year, according to data released by the Civil Aviation Authority on Thursday.

Overall, Greek airports handled some 13.6 million passengers travelling on a total of 134,305 flights, which noted a 5.3 percent increase during the January-May period.

In May alone, the Civil Aviation Authority’s data showed an 8.05 percent increase of total passenger traffic, with 5,076,207 passengers travelling through Greek airports.

Last month, domestic passengers increased by 10.85 percent and international passengers rose by seven percent.

The airports in Athens, Heraklion, Thessaloniki, Rhodes and Chania recorded the highest passenger traffic for May. Athens airport handled 1,795,859 passengers, followed by Heraklion airport with 723.259 passengers. Next came Thessaloniki’s airport that handled 523 493 passengers, Rhodes airport with 507,164 passengers and Chania airport with 320,865 passengers.
