Six Greek Airports Get Funding, Move to Upgrade

Six regional airports in Greece will get EU funding to the tune of 197 million euros towards their upgrade under the EU Infrastructure Investment Plan, the Greek Infrastructure, Transport and Networks Ministry announced.

As part of the so-called Juncker Plan – initiated by European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker in 2014 with the aim to kick-start EU growth – Greece will direct the funds to modernization and development of airports in Kastoria, Milos, Syros, Naxos, Paros and Chios, which were not included in the Fraport-Slentel concession.

The financial backing in the form of PPPs (Public Private Partnership) will focus on three main projects and include the design, construction (extension and upgrade), financing and management of Kastoria’s Aristotelis Airport set at a budget of 15 million euros; four airports on the Cyclades islands of Milos, Syros, Naxos and Paros, budgeted at 76.62 million euros; and of Chios’ Omiros Airport, amounting to 105 million euros.

Investors will have the right to use and manage the airport facilities under the supervision of the Civil Aviation Authority.
